Vegans like to eat vegan versions of foods that they used to eat before they went vegan.
Cheese and most of the products made from cow’s milk are often stated as an “excuse” to why people can not go fully vegan. Milk and butter are added to a lot of packaged foods and that is why a lot of aspiring vegans find it challenging to find convenient vegan foods.
At the moment I am spending my days breastfeeding our little Xander, who is now almost 3 months old. I hardly get anything done around the house apart from what is necessary. My food choices now prioritise convenience and I am delighted to have all the Sheese products in the fridge to enjoy.
If you are looking for vegan versions of cream cheese, cheddar cheese, feta cheese or mozzarella cheese, I want to introduce you to Bute Island Foods and their award winning Sheese Cheese.
The company is based on the Isle of Bute which is a small island on a west coast of Scotland. The company has been making vegan and animal free products since 1994. Since then the amazing team have been going from strength to strength and these days you can buy a variety of their ever growing range in almost any health food store in UK and Ireland. The Sheese range is also available in Tesco and Holland & Barrett stores.
The cream cheese as a whole is rich with a smooth and mild cheesy taste. To my taste, it is perfect, and it goes nicely with many different kinds of foods. It makes the perfect bagel brunch with tomatoes, it is nice to dip some celery and peppers into it and it also makes a lovely creamy salad dressing.
All of the varieties taste great. My personal favourites are the spring onion cheese and the garlic and herb cheese. The cheddar-style cream cheese is perfect with some tomatoes too and so is the chives cream cheese.
The garlic and herb cream Sheese works with pasta. I was experimenting with some courgette spaghetti and all you need is to fry them in some olive oil and then add some garlic and herb cream Sheese. You will get this rich and delicious dish, which is wonderful by itself with some salad. You can also enjoy it with some flat bread, falafels and tomatoes.
I also made some icing for the carrot cake which is also very nice. I didn’t have the patience to let it set in the fridge and we ended up with the icing being a bit runny, but the taste was amazing. I will be making it again for sure.
By far my most favourite product from the Sheese range is the vegan feta cheese. The feta is everything I was hoping it would be. Salty, flavoursome and cool.
Mediterranean style vegetables and just a few minutes I added the vegan feta and it melted beautifully.
The feta has this rich coolness, that I have loved all my life (I grew up in Bulgaria where I ate a lot of feta cheese) and I am over the moon that I can now enjoy it whenever I want to.
Here are 2 very simple dishes to enjoy it.
Kale and tomato risotto, served with olives, artichokes and pickled peppers
Falafel in a wrap is a dish that I love. The addition of feta cheese has made it perfect.
I have been truly spoiled with all the goodies from Bute Island Foods. The Vegan Mozzarella cheese has a nice creamy and fresh texture. It is great as the italians eat it with some fresh sweet tomatoes. I would like to experiment more with it and I am looking forward to make some pizza with it too.
Overall I highly recommend you try any of the Bute Island Foods. Whether you are vegan or you simply want to reduce the dairy consumption in your diet the product range has something for everyone.
You can see a full list of products and ingredients on their website here and feel free to follow them on Facebook for the latest news and competitions. (the latest one ends on Friday the 11th)
Here is to another meal with dairy free cheese.
Lots of love,
