Here’s the truth about back and neck pain: there are dozens of things that can cause pain but the physical reality is almost always the same. There is some form of compression, a squishing of the vertebrae into one another or a pinching of the nerve. Due to this being the core reason and everything else is a symptom of it, you can massage, sauna, and medicate yourself but this is only masking and not treating the cause of your pain. Take a look at the illustration below left. A healthy spine has full, firm, and resilient disc tissues that allow for a complete range of motion; this is an image of a healthy pain-free spine. What can interfere with a healthy spine are such things as sitting all day in an office or car, exercising without stretching, only rotating the spine 20% of its full potential, years of poor posture, carrying heavy objects and wearing unsupported footwear. If you have experienced any of these it is likely you may suffer from neck pain or back pain.

Relieves pain / decompresses the spine- One of the basic advantages of inversions is that it relieves spinal pain enabling a person to have better posture.

The spine affects how a person sits and stands so needless to say it is one of the most important parts of our body.

Inverting will help decompress the spine, realign your body, relieve pressure, reduce pain, create space between your discs, replenish your spinal fluid, lubricate the vertebrae and increase general mobility. When a person is under a lot of stress, their body tends to experience back pains, headaches, tightness, joint and muscle pains.

Physiotherapist LJ Nosse did a study titled ‘Inverted Spinal Traction’ published in Arch Phys. Medical Rehab 59: 367-370, Aug 78. The study confirmed that inverting decreased muscle tension by over 35% within the first 10 seconds! When muscle pain is gone, stress reduces. As a result, the person feels lighter and happier, ready to face the challenges in life.

Improves mood / relieves depression & anxiety- Inverting upside down can actually make you feel better; those suffering from irritation, shortness of temper, nervous breakdown and insomnia are relieved by neurotransmitters being released from the brain that are said to control depression, premenstrual symptoms, mood swings, blood flow through the brain cells, blood sugar levels and anxiety. The nervous system is stimulated, increasing mental alertness and clarity. People suffering from loss of sleep, memory and vitality have recovered by the regular practice of inverting.

Improves detoxification- The lymphatic system clears toxins from the tissues and plays a vital role in the immune system. Inversions circulate lymphatic fluid, helping to drain toxins from the extremities and move them towards the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes filter the lymphatic fluid that is moving towards the heart. Inversions promote more rapid circulation of the lymph through the nodes, the rate of blood purification and detoxification increases, helping to revitalize and maintain youth and beauty. This also helps reduce swelling conditions of the legs, relieving pressure in varicose veins and haemorrhoids.

Relieves insomnia– Inversions also help to decrease insomnia. Muscle tension is decreased by 35%. This is one of the reasons why a person can sleep better after inverting.

Experience anti-ageing– Inverting will also help reverse the ageing process by not only dramatically delaying the sagging skin process and toning the muscles around your face and body but also preventing you from shrinking as you mature. Yep, that’s right – we actually shrink a little every day!

Good circulation will automatically bring brightness to the skin making the person look younger than he/she actually is. Acne and other skin conditions will also tend to decrease and the general health of your skin is improved.Health Benefits of Inversion Therapy

Inversions are so effective that the US Army is planning to include it in its physical training. You can achieve a lot of benefits by inverting 3-5 mins every day. One of the most interesting facts about inversion is that slots and bats are the only land based mammals that do not suffer from osteoarthritis. This is because inversion is in their natural activity. So, if you have a family history of osteoarthritis, then make sure you start inverting from today.

Improves blood circulation– Inversions increase the blood flow to the brain, giving it more oxygen and nutrients and making the brain function faster and better. This improves concentration, memory, observation and boosts clarity of thought.

According to Dr. Robert Martin, author of ‘The Gravity Guiding System, Turning the Ageing Process Upside Down,’ the brain operates 14% more accurately when the brain is operating on an inverted, inclined plane. Inversion also helps move the stagnant blood in the body because you are standing against gravity when you are inverting. It forces the blood to move in a way which it would not do so when standing in a straight position.

Improves the circulatory system– The circulatory system is comprised of the heart, lungs and the entire system of vessels that feed oxygen and collect carbon dioxide and other waste products from the cells. Arteries fan out in an intricate tributary system from the heart, which pumps freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs outward. Veins return blood to the heart and, unlike arteries, make up a low-pressure system that depends on muscular movement or gravity to move blood along. One-way valves at regular intervals prevent backwash and keep fluids moving towards the heart in a system known as venous return.Turning yourself upside down encourages venous return. Inversions also ensure healthier and more effective lung tissue. When standing or sitting upright, gravity pulls our fluids earthward, and blood “perfuses” or saturates the lower lungs more thoroughly. The lower lung tissue is thus an intricate, underground network tied to every house in town which keeps the citizens healthy.

Lymph, like the blood returning to your heart via the veins, is dependent upon muscular movement and gravity to facilitate its return. Because the lymphatic system is a closed pressure system and has one-way valves that keep lymph moving towards the heart, when one turns upside down, the entire lymphatic system is stimulated, thus strengthening your immune system.

Improves endocrine system– There are several endocrine organs or ductless glands in the human system, which bathe in blood, absorb the nutrients from the blood and secrete hormones for the proper functioning of a balanced and well-developed body and brain. If the glands fail to function properly, the hormones are not produced as they should be and the body starts to deteriorate.

Many asanas have a direct effect on the glands and help them function properly. This ample supply of blood increases their efficiency in maintaining the body and the brain in good balance. Further, since the body is inverted the venous blood flows to the heart by force of gravity, without any strain. Healthy blood is allowed to circulate around the neck and chest. As a result, people suffering from breathlessness, palpitations, asthma, bronchitis and throat ailments get relief. As the head remains firm in this inverted position, and the supply of the blood to it is regulated by the firm chinlock, the nerves are soothed and headaches disappear.

Improves digestive system- The change in gravitational pull on the body also affects the abdominal organs so that the bowels move freely and constipation is relieved. It is recommended for urinary disorders and uterine displacement, menstrual trouble, and hernia. It activates the abdominal organs and relieves people suffering from stomach and intestinal ulcers and severe pain in the abdomen.

Inversions are the yogic approach to control indigestion. Indigestion, which may cause anxiety and skin disorders, is considerably improved when one practices inversions. By reversing the pull of gravity on the organs, especially the intestines, it helps to cleanse them and overcome problems of the liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines and reproductive system. The weight of the abdominal organs on the diaphragm encourages deep breathing, which gently massages the internal organs.

This also helps people suffering asthma, hay fever, diabetes, headaches, anxiety and menopausal imbalance.
