As you may know, water is an indispensable nutrient and therefore it can’t be treated lightly. We have to make sure we drink the best water from the healthiest sources, but how much water to drink a day?
Many people wonder if the standard recommendation that they saw on TV of drinking 8 glasses of water a day is correct.
The fact is that this is what’s recommended for the average consumer and the actual needs for every individual vary a lot. People think the best way to avoid dehydration is to drink when you are thirsty and your body will tell you how much you need.
This type of thinking works most of the times, as our bodies are some really fine tuned machines, but if you follow this advice you will find out that at the end of the day you will consume much less than you should actually.
Are 8 glasses a day too much or too little?
Those 8 glasses of water are the equivalent of about 1.9 liters which may seem quite low compared to the recommendation from the Institute of Medicine that states that men should consume about 3 liters and women 2.2 each day. These are some pretty good values that should satisfy the needs of most bodies.
But there again, are some exceptions from the rule, and quite many if you think of it. Some variables must be taken into consideration when you calculate your daily water intake.
If you happen to be and excessive sweater then you should drink more water than the average Joe just because you eliminate so much through sweat that your body may start to dehydrate and suffer some awful consequences.
Besides sweating, one must take into consideration the amount of physical exercise he does each day. This can be an important factor, as many athletes are required to drink up to 6 or more liters of water a day.
As a simple advice that I follow myself, I would recommend you to drink a glass of water each morning before doing anything else, this will help your dehydrated body restore it’s normal functions faster and kickstart your day.
Bottled water or tap water, which should I drink?
The bottled water vs tap water war has been in a verge lately, but the questions still remain unanswered. This depends a lot on the type of tap water that you havebut usually tap water is just as good as bottled water and much much less expensive.Tap water in big cities is carefully verified and tested not to contain any contaminants or things that are bad for your health. The same thing goes for the bottled water, but then again, besides the huge prices the bottles are going to become waste. And even those who are made for recycling may not be so nature friendly after all.
Regarding your health, bottled water may leak chemicals into water in time, as scientists discovered. So it may be a better idea to go for a cheaper drink from your tap water and if you are on the go you should either invest in a stainless steel bottle or just take a glass one.
